Literacy Programs

Learn more about Pizza Hut's "Carryout for Literacy" and Book It! reading programs.

In 1992, Hawaii Pizza Hut launched an exciting campaign called "Carryout for Literacy." To date "Carryout for Literacy" has raised over 3 million dollars and it is still going strong.

Hawaii Pizza Hut restaurants sell "Carryout for Literacy" cards for $10 each. The card entitles the customer to a "buy one, get one FREE" pizza discount on Carryout orders for one year.

The money collected from the sale of literacy cards supports many worthwhile literacy programs throughout the state. A few of the programs that have been funded include a book mobile on Kauai, a literacy program at Linapuni Elementary School, a full renovation of the children's section in the Kailua State Public Library, construction of a literacy room at Wailuku State Public Library and a recent $20,000 donation to Benjamin Parker Elementary School for library books destroyed in a fire. Pizza Hut has also provided support to Hawaii Literacy, Inc., an organization that promotes adult literacy and Lynne Waihee's Read to Me International which promotes reading aloud to children.

A kama'aina company since 1971, Hawaii Pizza Hut is a strong supporter of these and many more valued literacy programs throughout the state because we believe that literacy is fundamental. The Hawaii Pizza Hut Literacy Fund has been established within the Hawaii Community Foundation to provide funding for organizations that promote literacy through innovative, well-defined programs which are designed to produce measurable results. If your organization has a results-oriented literacy program for Hawaii which needs funding, please call Hawaii Community Foundation at (808) 537-6333 for more information. Grants are reviewed twice a year.

The Carry-out for Literacy Fundraiser Card is also available. These cards can be sold by not-for-profit groups interested in fundraising and supporting Literacy programs in Hawaii. We've helped many organizations raise thousands of dollars for playground equipment, computers, renovations to facilities, travel expenses and much more.

Book It! Reading Program

Pizza Hut is a sponsor of the Book It! reading program. The Book It! program is a reading incentive program for children in grades K through six. Here's how the program works:

1. The teacher sets monthly reading goals for each child in the class.
2. As soon as a monthly reading goal is met, the teacher gives the child a Pizza Award Certificate.
3. The child takes the Certificate to a participating Pizza Hut restaurant, where he or she is congratulated by the manager and given a free one topping Personal Pan Pizza (R), a recognition card and a sticker for the button.
4. On each subsequent visit, the child can redeem their Certificate for another one topping Personal Pan Pizza (R) and a sticker.
5. If a child meets the reading goals for all six months, he or she qualifies for the All-Star Reader's Honor Roll, a classroom record of student achievement. The child also receives a Book It! All-Star Reader Medallion with Neck Ribbon at Pizza Hut.

Book IT! Information will be mailed to the school's principal/librarian and is also available on the Book IT! website. Please feel free to call the Book IT! hotline at 800-426-6548 to see if your school is on our mailing list.

If you have any questions about the Book It! program, you can:

Call 1-800-4-BOOKIT (1-800-426-6548)

All program materials are free. No purchase is required at the restaurant and the pizza can be taken to go.
